Neurologic Music Therapy

Defining NMT -  We provide Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) which is a research based approach.  NMT focuses on using music to help train functional skills and build pathways in the brain for better cognitive skills, communication and coordinated motor movements.  NMT is about assessing the areas of need in a client and translating those needs or behaviors into "musical behaviors" for therapeutic outcomes.  This could include playing given rhythms on instruments, moving to a rhythmic cue, singing and other "musical behaviors" that have a positive outcome on non-musical behaviors like speech or walking patterns.

Sessions for Neurologic Disorders and Injury:  Our sessions can facilitate the recovery of important skills when there has been brain damage and we can help clients develop strategies to get through daily activities when coping with degenerative brain disease.

 PARKINSON'S DISEASE:

WALKING & MOTOR SKILL:  We provide gait training and use Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation to train clients' walking patterns to be more safe and functional.  We offer a home training program that includes recorded music set to a customized beat for the client to train with at home.

We educate and teach clients to use music as a strategy for maintaining motor function and to help in  initiating movements when the client gets "stuck" and cannot move.

SPEECH & VOICE:  We can also help maintain vocal quality using Therapeutic Singing techniques and  Rhythmic Speech Cueing to help clients speak more clearly and in an audible volume.

 TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY & STROKE:

MOTOR SKILL:  We can help facilitate the recovery of gait, gross and fine motor skills using rhythm in  music to improve motor coordination and motor planning.  We use Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance in which clients can actually train on piano, guitar, drums and other instruments for the goal of improving movement patterns. Playing an instrument is not necessary though, as studies have shown that movements set to customized music can help train motor skill.

SPEECH:  When speech is lost due to brain damage, often the ability to sing is still present.  We use techniques that can help clients regain short functional phrases through singing the phrases. Rhythmic Speech Cueing and adapted melodic intonation therapy can help clients initiate words and phrases that they cannot access otherwise.

COGNITIVE SKILL:  We help train cognitive skills such as sustained attention, multi-tasking, decision making, planning and strategizing. Music therapy interventions are created to practice and train cognitive skills through interactive music making experiences.

 DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES:

MOTOR SKILL:  We use a variety of musical instruments to train motor coordination as well as movement to music to help develop coordination and body awareness.

COMMUNICATION SKILL:  We can help improve speech articulation and initiation through vocal exercises, singing and rhythmic cueing.

COGNITIVE SKILL:  We use music therapy interventions to work on such skills as sustained attention, following directions and learning academic and life skills.

Seniors & Geriatric Populations:  We provide individual and group sessions for seniors and geriatric clients with the goals of decreasing social isolation, improving emotional states and increasing physical fitness & coordination.  We provide live and recorded music that is client preferred and that also has positive associations from other times in their lives.  Such music can evoke positive memories, positive emotions and increase socialization.  Music therapy sessions with this population is interactive and the therapist provides opportunities for the clients to sing, move and play instruments.
